Magdeleine

My family's origins are in Le Havre, but I was born in a small town, 20kms away, at St.Remain de Colbosc which I left at the age of 14 for a convent school in Rouen. When my father retired,in 1948, the family moved to Croissy sur Seine, a suburb of Paris. I was in England in 1948 for one year as an au pair in a family at Cirencester. I then followed a course to become a shorthand typist secretary and started work in Paris.ln those years I would work in winter to earn enough money so that I could travel in Europe during the summer, changing job each year. In November 1950 1 found employment as a bi-lingual secretary in a Reinsurance Broking business and was one of the secretaries to the big boss. In March i 951, the railways went on strike, and a young man working at the office who lived in the same area as I did offered to take me home on his motor-bike. We fell in love on the way and were engaged at Christmas 1951.

Daniel

I was born in Rueil-Malmaison and when I was two years old, the family moved to Versailles/Le Chesnay where we lived until the outbreak of war in 1939. Evacuated to Milly-la-For~t we moved to England in June 1940 when France was overrun. We found shelter at N"47, Bethune Road until the house suffered bomb damage during the Battle of Britain. Our next home was at N"1, Ashtead road near Clapton Common. I went to St.lgnatius high school from September 1940 until with part of the family I returned to France in 1946 1 went to a Business School in Paris and on 1 st January 1949 got my first job with a Reinsurance Broker where I met Magdeleine (see above). In Feburary 1952 1 joined a company acting as agents for a London Lloyd's Broker where I worked until I retired in April 1990.

Together

We were married in 1952 and we have lived happily ever since. We have four children: Jerome (1953), Genevieve (1955), Beatrice (1957) and Pierre (1961). All four married and produced 15 grand-children. In 1957 we joined a Church movement for married couples: Equipes Notre Dame (Teams of Our Lady) which helped us tremendously to overcome the usual difficulties of married life and to build up our faith through Bible studies, spiritual retreats and various other exercises. During the 1960s we helped in launching the Teams in England and were in contact with Teams in the U.S. Australia and India. In 1972 1 took a three years sabatical leave from the office and actually worked full time for the Teams at their H.Q. in Paris. During all those years, Magdeleine worked hard at bringing up the children and having come across the Charismatic Renewal in the U.S. in 1972 she started a prayer group in our area which is still going strong. Since 1990, we live a happy and busy life as do most retired people: rambling group, twinning association, computer, lectures at the Old Age University, visiting our children, etc. We also belong to an Ignatian Spirituality group.
