Gabriel Frederick Flach

Born 1889 and educated at St. Ignatius College, Stamford Hill, London N.16. Served on the Altar at the church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Bouverie Road, Stoke Newington. On completion of his studies he took up Engineering and was apprenticed at Short Bros., Rochester until the death of his father Joseph in 1908 when he had to give up engineering and join the Family Firm of Joseph Flach.

He was called up for service in the Great World War of 1914/1918 and served as a driver of Albion lorries in Salonika. After the war he continued with the family firm and on the 28th June 1919 he married Elizabeth Rosa Faupel and eventually set up home at 58b North Hill, Highgate. Children followed: Peggy 1921, Ronnie & Tony (Identical twins) 1922, John 1930 and Peter 1935. In 1935 they moved house to 79 Holden Road, Woodside Park N.12. This had a very long garden running down to a brook - fruit and veg were cultivated, and during the war chickens were reared.

In his early years he was a keen photographer using a plate camera and making contact prints or lantern slides of his work. With the event of box cameras and roll film he gave up but continued his interest in foreign travel. He was much loved by his 19 grandchildren and had a great sense of humour. On the night of the 15/16th December 1972 he died in his sleep of a heart attack.

Mum continued to live at 31 Ravensdale Avenue, North Finchley and kept the garden going, but the house was too big, and she refused to be shown round suitable small flats. She moved into Nazareth House, East Finchley in 1983 expecting to die within a few weeks, but kept going for 5 years before passing out peacefully during mass on the 1Oth July 1988. She did not really enjoy the last years of her life being completely deaf and jokes written down on paper never seemed as funny as when told.
