b. 7 Apr 1942 m. 27 Sep 1967 Ian Longworth
After leaving school I went to Exeter University, following in Maureen's
footsteps, and studied French and Spanish. This included spending a year in
France as an assistant teacher. I was sent to Millau in Aveyron, then a centre
of the leather industry and glove manufacture. It is quite near to Roquefort,
with spectacular countryside nearby - and has recently been in the headlines as
a centre of protests against globalisation/Americanisation. We were within
fairly easy reach of the Mediterranean and I had a really good time.
When I had finished my degree I worked as a secretary for a few years, first
at the British Museum, where I met Ian, (we were married in 1967) and then at
the Institute of Education in London. Ian was at that time an Assistant Keeper
in the Museum, but subsequently rose to become Keeper of Prehistoric and
Romano- Bntish Antiquities. During most of the time that he was at the Museum
he had to do one or two weeks per year Residence Duty which involved living on
site and coping with any emergencies that might arise. Luckily nothing very
serious ever did. The rest of us were sometimes able - depending on school,
exams, etc. - to stay there as well, and I enjoyed being based in the centre of
London for a few days.
Another enjoyable part of our early life together was that we used to go on
excavations for a month or so in the summer. We did two years at Sutton Hoo,
near Woodbridge - but we didn't find any gold - and five seasons at Gnmes'
Graves near Thetford, where we found an awful lot of flint, which is still
being analysed and published.
Timothy was born in 1975. He did a degree in Economics at Brunel , and is
now working for ABN Amro in Bishopsgate. He likes playing his electric guitar
and spends most of what he earns on amphfiers
Alison was born in 1978. She has just finished her BSc in Chemistry at
Oxford, and is starting an M.Sc. She (and I !) are also trying to organise her
wedding for next year, to Andy Hallas
