Frances
Eva Louise Flach
b. 4 Oct 1916 d. 9 Sep 1981
Frances was born in 1916 and educated at Our Ladies Convent, Bouverie Road
and in Germany. On her return she worked for London and Thames Haven Oil
Wharves for many years, including during the War, where, because she was in a
reserved occupation, she was not called up but served as a member of the
Auxiliary Fire Service.
Her second job was with Barclays DCO (Dominion Colonial and Overseas) and
when, in 1953 she went to South Africa for 2 years, she had a transfer to the
branch in Pretoria. On her return on a Union Castle Liner, James, Dennis and
Laurie met her off the boat in Genoa and drove to Germany for a holiday.
On her return to England, she continued to work for Barclays until her
retirement. She lived at the family home at 13 Park Hill until Lillie died in
1968, when she bought a flat in Willowmead Close, Ealing, where she lived until
her death in 1981.
Her main interest was with the Servite Tertiaries of Mary and she was a
professed member of the third order. Much of her time was spent at Servite
House in Ealing, a nursing home for the chronically sick and disabled. She
enjoyed photography and stamp collecting and always looked forward to family
gatherings.
When she became ill with Parkinsons disease, she was taken in to Servite
House and looked after. She had always said that she wanted to die in Lourdes
and when the Across organisation took a party from Servite House to Lourdes,
Frances was asked if she would like to go. Although not completely aware of her
surroundings, she understood enough to convey her wishes and died in Lourdes a
few days later.
