The Family of Laurie Flach

After studying Classics at University, Laurie served Queen and country for two years before starting his first job as a Research Officer with Bentalls Department Store in Kingston-upon Thames. He met Celia Trasler while home on leave and they married in 1960. They moved to Chessington in 1962 shortly after the arrival of Catherine. Dominic and Martina followed and they moved to Walton-on-Thames in 1966. Robert arrived in 1967 and. by 1971 they had outgrown the house in Walton and moved back to Ealing. In 1974 Laurie changed jobs to work for the London Borough of Ealing in the Management Services section. He stayed working there until 1995 when redundancy forced early retirement and the move to Winchester.

With four children, holidays were mainly spent in caravans by the seaside - Swanage, Tenby, Selsey - but in 1976 the whole family went by car (and motorail) to Kempten (near Munich) for three and a half weeks to stay with a friend. What an adventure!

The children are all now grown up and have left home. Catherine is working in marketing and living in Slip End, Bedfordshire. Dominic is married to Dawn, has two children, Rebecca and Thomas, and lives in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. After his first degree in Civil Engineering, he took his PhD in Satellite Imagery. He now works in computers for the Thorn Group. Martina is married to Daniel, lives in Harrow and works as a computer programme tester. Daniel is a qualified actuary and works for an insurance firm in Amersham. They are planning to go to Australia to work for two years in October. Robert is married to Helen, they have two children, Elizabeth and Christopher, and live in Ruislip. Robert works in the city as a financial analyst for a Lloyds company.

Laurie and Celia are enjoying their retirement in the country. It is still quiet and peaceful and they do not miss the hustle and bustle of London. Laurie enjoys his hobbies of stamp collecting, computing and bowls and Celia her garden. They look forward to visits from children and grandchildren and other friends and relatives.

Catherine Power (nee Flach)

Daughter of Laurence and Cecilia Flach

I left school at 18 and spent a year socialising (and doing a bit of studying) at West London University in Ealing.

I left home at 19 full of the joys of (perceived) adulthood and moved back again at 20. Left again at 21 moved back at 22. Left again at 24 and managed to stay away this time to the delight of my parents! Married John Power in 1987 but unfortunately the marriage did not last and ended in 1996.

I now live in a pretty Victorian terraced cottage (with a very long garden) in a small Bedfordshire village, with my cat Reggie (named after one of the Kray Twins due to the fact that his claws are razor sharp and dangerous to get close to!). For the past 5 years I have worked for a bar code reader manufacturer based 15 minutes drive from home (very convenient) as their Marketing Manager.

James Dominic Flach & Dawn Lesley Flach

Brief Family History 1981- 2000

I left home in 1981 to go to Aston University to study for a BSc in Civil Engineering. The four years at University included 18 months working on site for McAlpines, trying to play bass guitar in a band and, of course, meeting Dawn.

After graduating I decided to stay on at Aston and do a PhD in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems whilst Dawn went out to earn some money. I completed my PhD in 1988 and started work on the Science Park developing ground reception and processing systems for weather satellites. Meanwhile Dawn was building a successful career in marketing for a paint company.

After 10 years we finally got married in Evesham. A few years of good holidays, scuba diving, safaris and generally going out, then along came Rebecca in 1996 with a `Made in Hong Kong' sticker on her foot! After 18 months back at work Dawn decided to become a full-time mother. Shortly afterwards, in 1999, Thomas was born.

This year has been very exciting - changing jobs after 10 years with the same company, re-locating to `the South', watching Rebecca make new friends and Thomas grow hair, and saving lots of money importing a Subaru Impreza Turbo from Holland.

Despite the young family we have stayed fairly mobile, taking the kids on holidays abroad, kept the Triumph Spitfire and the QPR season ticket - (un)fortunately the bass guitar is now behind the wardrobe.

Career

After moving to the UK in 1993 I started work as a programmer. This was obviously a little too lively and I have spent the last six years as an actuary.

Love

We met eight years ago at work and got married 2 years ago on 2nd May 1999 at Moor Park, Rickmansworth and had a 7 week honeymoon in Grenada and driving round the west of the USA in a Ford Mustang convertible.

Present and Future

We moved to Sydney, Australia in October 2000 to enjoy the sunshine and the good life for a few years. We live in a wonderful apartment with a view of the harbour. Daniel is currently working for his UK company. Martina is working for an investment bank. We have made great friends with the children of Isobel and Norbert de Rome. We are expecting a baby boy in November.
